Pantry Essentials

June 28th, 2009 at 02:12 am

I'm really starting to enjoy cooking. It is fun- a lot more fun than I used to give it credit for.

Boyfriend and I start to move in on Wednesday (I can't believe it is so soon!) and I want to make sure we have some things in the pantry before we move in officially.

So, how do I start a well stocked pantry? When I moved into my dad's, I didn't have to worry about that. My dad has pretty much everything you could ask for. All I needed to do was to keep it stocked.

I have a list of items I would like to get to get us started but I feel like I'm missing stuff. Any thoughts?

1. Olive Oil.
2. Canola Oil.
3. Flour
4. Brown Sugar
5. Sugar
6. Buttermilk (dry, you add water)
7. Apple Cider Vinegar (quickly becoming a favorite!)
8. Some canned veggies (tomatoes, green beans, carrots, etc)
9. Cornstarch
10. Canned tuna and chicken
11. Chicken Broth
12. Pasta
13. Rice
14. Peanut Butter
15. Salt
16. Panko
17. Oatmeal
18. Some canned soup (chicken noodle, cream of potato, etc.)

That's all I can think right now. These are the items I've used the most frequently over the past couple months but I plan on trying a bunch of new recipes (and making some of my own!). I'm just not sure what else I need. I would like all the items in my pantry to be able to be used in several recipes, not just a few specific ones.

What about spices & dry beans? Your list is a great start!

Oh, yes, how could I have forgotten spices and beans? I even have this really cool spice rack that is magnetic and you can put on the fridge!

How about jelly to go with that peanut butter?
    Baking soda?
    Baking powder?
    Tomato sauce/paste?
Condiments - mustard, relish, ketchup, pickles?
    Salad dressing?

That's some of what's in mine, anyhow...

  4. cassandra Says:

Definitely need jelly, tomato paste, and mayo. Condiments are also needed. They are all added to the list (how I forgot I don't know- I use these things all the time!)

What is baking powder and soda used for in the kitchen?

Veggies and fruits I buy as I need them so I won't stock up on that until we move in.

baking powder you add to things to make them rise, like muffins, cakes etc. other uses too, but thats what i use it for.

i have a lot of probably odd things in my pantry as i cook a wide range of things, but you might find something in here that you use and have forgotten:
brown rice, white rice, arborio rice, udon & soba noodle, rice noodles, vermicelli noodles, lasagne sheets, pastas (i have a lot of types), barley, kidney & cannelini beans, nori, rice sheets, tinned tomatoes, tinned beetroot & pineapple & tinned fruit, soy sauce, white wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, sweet chili sauce, rice flour, almond meal, nuts/dried fruit, wholemeal/white plain & SR flour, dry yeast, icing sugar, raw sugar, brown sugar, caster sugar, coconut, coconut milk, taco shells, semolina, lentils, golden syrup, honey, oats, sea salt, black pepper, other herbs & spices, herbal & black teas, coffee, jams, tahini, vegemite, olives, sundried tomatoes, puff pastry, filo pastry, white and red wine, eggs, stock powder...

thats all i can list right now lol. Big Grin

Vinegars! I forgot about vinegars- I'll add balsamic vinegar to the list and red wine vinegar. I'll also add dried fruit (especially blueberries- I love dried blueberries!). There are so many things I forgot about.

I can't buy any alcohol as I am under 21 so getting red and white wine is not an option right now.

I see you have peanut butter. How about some crackers or bread to go with it?

    Fresh fruit?
    Fresh veggies?

  8. cassandra Says:

I'm not a huge fan of crackers but boyfriend likes them so I will add that to the list. Bread, fresh fruits, and fresh veggies I will buy once we officially move (probably late July). I don't want to buy things that will spoil before we move in officially.
